Here are the answers to the top 10 most common questions we get asked as Acupuncturists at Poke Acupuncture. For more information on our therapies and the conditions we work with please just click on them.
Are Acupuncture treatments covered by private health funds?

Yes! There has been a lot of shake-up in the private health fund world lately with some complementary services being removed, however, Acupuncture and Chinese herbal Medicine services ARE COVERED by private health funds.

Each health fund and personal plan is different in the amount that they will cover, so please speak with your health fund for details.

Do I need a Doctor’s referral for Acupuncture?

No, a Doctor’s referral is not required to begin Acupuncture treatment.

Are the Acupuncture needles reused?

No, Acupuncture needles are not reused. They are single-use, completely sterile and made from 100% surgical grade stainless steel.

What conditions can Acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture can help with numerous different conditions. At Poke Acupuncture the most common conditions that we see are: sciatica, shoulder pain, lower back & hip pain, nerve pain, neck pain, Plantar Fasciitis, and headaches

How many Acupuncture treatments will I need?

The amount of treatment required will depend on: the type of health condition, the length of time you have had the condition, your age and your overall health.

The longer and more severe the condition, the more treatments it can require. The opposite is also true: the more acute and mild the condition (e.g. you woke up today with a stiff neck) the less treatment is required.

In our experience anywhere from 2 - 8 consecutive treatments are often required.

How does the treatment process begin?

The initial appointment begins with an Orthopedic and general health assessment to figure out what the issue is and what is causing it. With that information a treatment plan is made and an Acupuncture treatment is performed.

The initial assessment and treatment are both conducted at the first appointment.
Follow up treatments may include a few brief questions and assessments, but the main focus is on treatment.

At Poke Acupuncture do you offer both Acupuncture and Dry Needling?

Yes. We offer Chinese Acupuncture, Motor Point Acupuncture, Electro Acupuncture and Dry Needling. Depending on the patient’s goals, Acupuncture or Dry Needling can be offered separately or combined in the same treatment.

At Poke Acupuncture do you offer other therapies during an Acupuncture or Dry Needling treatment?

Yes. An Acupuncture or Dry Needling treatment session may also include: Cupping, IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization), Massage therapy, or Kinesio taping depending on the patients needs. When required patients are also prescribed corrective exercises and Chinese herbal medicines

Will I be required to take herbal medicine or supplements?

We may recommend herbal medicine as part of your treatment plan, depending on your condition, but whether you want to take it is completely up to you.

How will I feel after an Acupuncture treatment?

After an Acupuncture treatment most patients report feeling relaxed and tired. The following day it is not uncommon to feel some mild muscle soreness.
