Curious About Acupuncture? Common Questions Answered

Are you curious about acupuncture and how it can help you? At Poke Acupuncture, we often get questions from first-time patients unsure about what to expect.

To make things easier, we’ve compiled answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about acupuncture, its benefits, and how to prepare for your visit

Is Acupuncture Covered by Private Health Funds?

Good news! Acupuncture is covered by most private health funds, and at Poke Acupuncture, we offer HICAPS for on-the-spot claims. To know the exact rebate you’re eligible for, we recommend speaking with your health fund provider.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

The thought of needles may sound intimidating, but acupuncture needles are nothing like what you might be used to. They’re incredibly thin, and most people don’t find them painful. You may feel a slight sensation, tingling, or even a muscle twitch when the needles are inserted, but once they’re in place, discomfort is minimal or nonexistent. Many of our patients actually find the experience deeply relaxing!

What Conditions Can Acupuncture Help With?

Acupuncture is a versatile treatment used for a variety of conditions, including:

- Pain management: sciatica, shoulder pain, hip bursitis, back pain, and foot neuropathy, to name a few.

- Stress and anxiety relief: Acupuncture can help calm your nervous system and reduce tension.

- Fertility and pregnancy support: We offer treatments to support fertility, assist with breech positioning, promote induction, and provide pre-birth care.

If you’re wondering whether acupuncture can address your specific concerns, feel free to reach out—we’d be happy to discuss it with you.

How Soon Will I See Results?

We aim for noticeable improvement after your first treatment. While some conditions may require 2-3 sessions to show results, we believe in tracking progress early to ensure the treatment is working for you.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of treatments varies depending on your individual needs and the condition being addressed. Some people experience relief after just a couple of sessions, while others benefit from ongoing treatment for chronic or complex issues.

Will I Receive Treatment During My First Visit?

Yes! Your first appointment includes a 15-20 minute consultation to understand your concerns and goals, followed by a 55-60 minute treatment session. This comprehensive 75-minute appointment ensures we get started on your healing journey right away.

Are Acupuncture Needles Reused?

No. At Poke Acupuncture, your safety is our priority. We use sterile, single-use needles for every session to ensure the highest level of hygiene and care.

How Should I Prepare for an Acupuncture Session?

To get the most out of your treatment, here are a few tips for preparing:

- Wear loose, comfortable clothing so your practitioner can easily access acupuncture points.

- Avoid coming to your session on an empty stomach—it’s best to have a light meal beforehand.

- Bring any relevant scans, reports, or test results that could assist in tailoring your treatment.

Can Acupuncture Be Combined with Other Treatments?

Absolutely. Acupuncture works beautifully alongside Western medicine, physical therapy, chiropractic care, and massage. It’s a great way to complement your existing healthcare routine.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Acupuncture is generally safe, and side effects are rare. Some patients may experience mild bruising, slight soreness at the needle sites, or feel tired after their session. These effects usually resolve quickly and are a natural part of your body’s healing process.
