Endometriosis is not only a common cause of dysmenorrhea (painful periods) but may also contribute to complications with fertility. Caused by improper implantation of endometrial cells into surrounding tissues (such as the fallopian tubes, ovaries and other pelvic structures), endometriosis often presents with pelvic pain that can occur with menses, sexual intercouse and bowel movements.
While some women with endometriosis present with little to no symptoms, others can suffer from excruciating pain. A diagnosis of endometriosis can be challenging, as there are a number of other conditions with similar symptoms and patients may present with one or a few of these symptoms. Typically, laparoscopic examination and removal of tissue is a method of Western diagnosis, combined with clinical signs and symptoms.
In Chinese Medicine, we may look at endometriosis from a couple of different perspectives, relative to the predominant signs and symptoms. At Poke Acupuncture, we often see women who have a “suspected” endometriosis diagnosis, and present with painful periods or intercourse, or heavy periods. Each individual case is addressed based on the predominant symptoms and a course of acupuncture (and often Chinese herbal therapy) is recommended.
At your first visit a detailed menstrual, health and lifestyle history will be conducted. A treatment plan will then be designed and implemented utilising natural medical interventions such as: acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.
