Has shoulder pain made it difficult to sleep on your side, reach up, or even dress comfortably? If so, you might be experiencing what’s known as a Shoulder Impingement.
Shoulder impingement happens when tendons and bursae in your shoulder get “pinched” as you move your arm. This can lead to pain, swelling, and limit your ability to lift or rotate your arm comfortably.
Shoulder impingement can start suddenly or gradually, with symptoms like:
- Pain at the Top or Side of Your Shoulder: Often a deep ache or sharp pain in this area.
- Increased Pain When Lifting Your Arm: Especially noticeable during overhead movements like reaching up to hang clothes on the line.
- Nighttime Discomfort: Pain that gets worse when lying on the affected shoulder, making it difficult to get a good night’s sleep.
- Weakness in Your Arm: Making daily tasks feel difficult and frustrating.
- Poor Posture: Years of slouching or a forward-slumped posture can shift the shoulder joint into a position that places extra strain on the rotator cuff tendons and bursae.
- Muscle Imbalances in the Shoulder: When some shoulder muscles are stronger or tighter than others, it can throw off your shoulder’s natural movement and positioning, leading to increased pressure and pain.
- Overuse and Repetitive Movements: Repeatedly using your shoulder for the same motion over time—whether reaching, lifting, or working overhead—can wear down the tendons, making impingement more likely.
