Knee Osteoarthritis

Knee osteoarthritis, often referred to as "wear and tear arthritis," is the most prevalent form of knee arthritis affecting millions worldwide.

In a healthy knee, smooth articular cartilage provides cushioning and protection to the ends of the leg bones inside the knee. This allows effortless bending and straightening of the knee.

However, as we age or subject our knees to repetitive stress, this protective cartilage gradually wears away. The erosion exposes the bones of the knee to friction and pressure, leading to knee osteoarthritis.

Symptoms of Knee Osteoarthritis

The onset of knee osteoarthritis knee pain is typically gradual, though it can also manifest suddenly. Common symptoms include:

  • Stiffness and swelling around the knee joint, making movement challenging
  • Morning stiffness and increased discomfort after periods of rest
  • Aggravation of  pain during or after vigorous activity
  • Sensations like locking, creaking, or grinding in the knee joint (crepitus)
  • Feeling of weakness or instability in the knee
  • Heightened pain sensitivity with changes in weather conditions

Risk Factors for Knee Osteoarthritis

Several factors can increase the likelihood of developing knee osteoarthritis, including:

  • Advancing age
  • Excess body weight
  • Repetitive stress or overuse of the knee joint
  • Previous knee injuries or trauma
