A common neck condition that often causes pain and tingling in the arm and hand is called cervical radiculopathy.
Cervical radiculopathy occurs when the nerves in the neck are compressed, leading to symptoms such as pain, tingling, burning, and weakness that extend from the shoulder down to the fingers.
Patients with cervical radiculopathy often report that they find it challenging to sleep comfortably due to the pain. Many resort to sleeping in a recliner, as it helps keep the neck in a neutral position, which can alleviate their arm pain and provide some relief for a few hours of sleep.
Cervical radiculopathy is the compression of nerve roots in the neck that supply the arm and hands. This compression is typically caused by factors such as herniated discs, disc degeneration, bone spurs, or muscle tension near the nerve roots. It can also result from post-surgical nerve damage.
The symptoms of cervical radiculopathy include pain, tingling, burning, aching, numbness, and weakness that can radiate from the neck and shoulder down the arm to the hands and fingers. Certain neck and arm positions, movements, and postures can trigger or aggravate these symptoms. Due to its causes and symptoms, cervical radiculopathy is sometimes referred to as "sciatica of the arm."
